India’s Got Latent row: SC Urges Centre To Regulate ‘Obscene Content’ On YouTube

In response to the abuse of social media by some channels, the Supreme Court on Tuesday urged the Center to think about regulating “obscene content” on YouTube and other sites.

The Supreme Court’s comments followed row over controversial remarks made by YouTuber and podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia during his guest appearance on the show India’s Got Latent.

Ranveer Allahbadia filed a plea with the top court, asking for temporary release from arrest and the clubbing of several FIRs against him in the case.

According to the Supreme Court, such a “vacuum and barren area” cannot continue.

‘So-called YouTube channels misusing space’

During the hearing, Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati, who was there for another case, was told by a bench of Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh to ask the Attorney General and Solicitor General for help with the issue.

News agency ANI quoted Justice Kant remarked to Bhati, “There was this case of so-called YouTubers… We would like you (the government) to do something. If the government is willing to do something, we are happy; otherwise, we will not leave this vacuum and barren area the way so-called YouTube channels are misusing it and all these things are going on..”.

The bench urged the administration to respond, emphasizing the delicate and significant nature of the matter. The Supreme Court went on to say, “We should not overlook the importance and sensitivity of the issue”.

Bhati was also directed by Justice Kant to ask the Attorney General and Solicitor General to attend the upcoming hearing.

The Supreme Court bench harshly criticized Ranveer Allahbadia during Tuesday’s case discussion, calling his remarks offensive and extremely dishonorable.

The bench stated that his parents and society would be ashamed of his behavior, adding, “There is something very dirty in his mind, which has been vomited by him in the program.”
