Chowdhury Slams Mamata’s Government Over Handling of Kolkata Doctor’s Murder Case

West Bengal’s Mamata Banerjee administration faces severe criticism from Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury over its handling of the Kolkata rape and murder case. Chowdhury accused the state government of dithering and incompetence, particularly in its response to the brutal incident. “It is condemnable,” Chowdhury remarked, citing the worsening law and order situation. “The state government is incapable and seems intent on helping the accused,” he told ANI.

The horrific crime involved the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor, whose body was discovered with severe injuries inside the seminar hall of the state-run RG Kar Medical College Hospital last Friday. Following public outrage, the Calcutta High Court ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the incident, signaling a lack of confidence in the state’s ability to conduct a fair investigation. In connection with the crime, police have apprehended a civic volunteer named Sanjay Roy.

The court echoed Chowdhury’s sentiments and expressed concern over the handling of the case. The court suggested that the former principal of the medical college, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, should have been interrogated first. Dr. Ghosh tendered his resignation on Monday, citing moral responsibility for the tragic incident.

In the wake of the court’s directive, West Bengal’s Leader of Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Health Minister. “We demand the arrest of Kolkata CP Vineet Goyal, the personal physician of the CM, Dr. SP Das, and Dr. Sandip Ghosh, as they are the main architects of this heinous crime,” Adhikari declared. He went on to label the incident as a “brutal murder and gang rape.”

The demand for accountability and immediate action continues to mount, with the state government under pressure to ensure justice for the victim and restore public confidence in its governance and law enforcement capabilities.
