President Murmu at NFSU Convocation: ‘Need for forensic experts is rising’

President Droupadi Murmu praised the passing of three new criminal legislation and emphasized the need for more forensic specialists in the nation. Speaking at the National Forensic Science University (NFSU) in Gandhinagar for its third convocation, Murmu stated that more job prospects in the forensics industry are becoming available.

Murmu stated, “July 1 2024 will be remembered for a crucial change in the justice system. The three new criminal laws came into effect on the day. It has become mandatory for forensic experts to conduct investigations at the crime scene in cases where the punishment is more than seven years. The need for forensic experts is rising. This university was set up to address the need. More employment opportunities are opening up and new doors will open for you”.

Speaking about the changes, Murmu stated: “Forensic facilities will be upgraded in all states. Time-bound forensic investigation has been made mandatory. Changes have been brought in to make forensic examination and investigation stronger”.

Murmu urged the students to ensure the fast delivery of justice to everyone and said: “Make sure that nobody is left without justice due to financial limitations.”

Regarding the delay in investigations, Murmu stated: “The inability to quickly examine exhibits that arrive at forensic facilities in huge quantities is one of the several causes of delays in the legal system. In addition to expanding forensic facilities, more professionals like you are needed. I’m glad to hear that the nation’s forensic environment is being expanded with time-bound measures.

While the “capabilities of forensic experts are increasing,” Murmu added, the emergence of digital technology, particularly artificial intelligence, has given rise to “new ways to commit crimes.”

Murmu noted that NFSU was unique and valued the fact that more women were receiving degrees during the ceremony. Women are more likely to be compassionate, just, and to stand by the weaker members of society. The fact that there are more women than men among the students graduating today makes me glad. Women make up over 85% of the gold medal recipients. “I envision a future Viksit Bharat that is centered on justice,” she remarked.

“Any justice system will be considered strong only when it is inclusive…when it works for the weaker and deprived sections of society based on forensic evidence and provides impartial and speedy justice. “This should be your goal,” Murmu instructed the pupils.
