On Sunday, Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing them of doing all in their power to undermine national unity.
Speaking at a public gathering in the national capital, Kharge said the BJP hates the common man of the country.
“They are leaving no stone unturned to break our unity. Fight between religions, between castes. They lift one caste up in a golden room, and put down another,” he was quoted by ANI as saying.
Kharge also said that PM Modi gives incentive to one caste of the Muslim community.
“They leave behind the common man because they hate them. Our fight is against this hatred. For that, political power is essential,” Kharge added.
Invoking Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar as well, the Congress chairman claimed that if he had not granted the common people political power through the constitution, there would not have been as many common people pursuing careers as MPs, MLAs, IAS, and IPS officers.
The ruling party has consistently disputed the accusations made by the Congress that the BJP is anti-minorities and anti-people.
Remarks in the backdrop of Maharashtra drubbing
Days after the Congress was soundly defeated in the Maharashtra Assembly elections, taking home only 16 seats out of the 288-member body, Mallikarjun Kharge made these comments. The Nationalist Congress Party’s Sharad Pawar faction and its alliance partners Shiv Sena (UBT) also performed poorly. Ten and twenty seats were obtained by each of them.
In the November 20 elections, the BJP-led Mahayuti Alliance gained 233 seats, a landslide victory. 132 seats were gained by the BJP alone, 57 by the Shiv Sena’s Eknath Shinde group, and 41 by the NCP’s Ajit Pawar faction.
The upcoming elections in the nation’s capital, New Delhi, will be the next major test for Kharge’s Congress. As of the now, the Delhi assembly has no MLAs from the party.
