Cyclone Fengal: Several Parts Of Chennai Inundated, Vehicles Parked On Flyovers

On Saturday, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin assessed the state’s readiness because Cyclone Fengal is expected to bring significant rains over the next 48 hours. With wind gusts of up to 90 kmph, cyclonic storm Fengal is predicted to reach landfall near Puducherry on Saturday afternoon, November 30, over the Bay of Bengal.

Due to the persistently heavy rains, officials have issued travel advisories for travelers and have affected numerous flights to and from Chennai.

Several areas of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Puducherry are under a red alert, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Weather changes, including high tides and heavy rainfall, are expected to occur in the area.

A red alert has been issued due to heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in numerous areas of Tamil Nadu, south Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and interior Karnataka, according to Ananda Das, head of the IMD’s Cyclonic section.
“The majority of coastal districts will be more affected, with the Karaikal-Mahalipuram crossing point close to Puducherry. Rainfall and wind are expected. The wind gusted to 70 km/h today and reached 50–60 km/h. There will be very heavy rain between 1 and 2 p.m. There will be sporadic heavy to extremely heavy rains in various locations”, according to Dr. S. Balachandran, director of Chennai’s regional meteorological center.

In Puducherry and other Tamil Nadu districts, including Kanchipuram, all schools and colleges were closed on Saturday.

In the meantime, as Cyclone Fengal draws near, the Puducherry fisheries department has warned fishermen not to go out to sea. In order to avoid damage, the alert also advised fishermen to relocate their boats and gear to higher ground.

Kamashwaram, Virundhamavadi, Pudupalli, Vedrappu, Vanamadevi, Vallapallam, Kallimedu, Eeravayal, and Chemboadi are among the impacted places.

Toll-free numbers 112 and 1077 have been established by the Department of Revenue and Disaster Management to take public distress calls. The WhatsApp number 9488981070 is another way that people can get assistance. Six relief centers in the districts of Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam currently house 471 individuals from 164 households.

As Cyclone Fengal develops in the Bay of Bengal, the Indian Navy also launched a thorough disaster response plan on Thursday.
