Gujarat: BJP’s Swarupji Thakor Wins Vav By-Poll In Close Contest

In Gujarat’s Vav assembly by-poll, Swarupji Thakor, a candidate for the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP), defeated Gulabsinh Rajput, a candidate for the Congress, by a narrow margin of 2,353 votes on Saturday.

According to Election Commission of India (ECI), Thakor received 91,755 votes, while Rajput received 89,402 votes.

According to Gujarat Congress spokesperson Manish Doshi, the party has conceded defeat in a closely contested race in which Rajput fell short by about 1,300 votes.

Mavji Patel, an independent candidate who ran after being turned down for a BJP ticket, received 27,173 votes.

After incumbent Congress MLA Geniben Thakor was elected to the Lok Sabha earlier this year from the Banaskantha constituency, a by-election was held on November 13 with a 70.55% voter turnout.

In 192 polling stations,321 polling booths were used for voting, and 3.10 lakh voters – 1.61 lakh men and 1.49 lakh wome – were eligible to cast ballots.

The constituency’s demographic makeup includes approximately 43,000 Dalits, 25,000 Maldharis (OBC), 18,00 Brahmins, 50,000 Chaudhary voters, and about 83,000 Thakor voters.

Since the election was the first big race in the area following the Congress’s win in the Banaskantha Lok Sabha seat, which includes the Vav assembly segment, it attracted a lot of interest.

After a failed attempt in the 2022 assembly election, Thakor was defeated by Geniben Thakor, who had previously won the Vav seat twice in a row, including a significant victory in the 2017 assembly election against Shankar Chaudhary, the assembly speaker and BJP strongman.
