On Monday, Kailash Gahlot, a Delhi minister, joined the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP), just a day after he resigned from the Aam Adami Party (AAP). According to Gahlot’s resignation letter, the AAP’s “political ambitions” have overtaken its commitments towards the people.
The 50-year-old said in his resignation letter to Arvind Kejriwal, the founder of AAP, “instead of fighting for people’s rights we have increasingly only been fighting for our own political agenda”.
Gahlot, a prominent Jat leader in the party, also took a jab at Kejriwal by pointing out some “awkward” and “embarrassing” scandals like “Sheeshmahal”, which he claimed make people question whether “we still believe in being a ‘Aam Aadmi’”.
Blow to AAP
Gahlot, who was incharge of portfolios of Women and Child Development, IT, Administrative reforms, and Home, is making is making the move as the party prepares for the Delhi Assembly elections in February, next year.
Gahlot is the third Kejriwal cabinet member to resign from both the party and the ministerial portfolio. In April, Raaj Kumar Anand, the minister of labor and employment and social welfare, left the party and joined BJP. In November 2022, Rajendra Pal Gautam Resigned from the party and cabinet, and Anand took his position.
Why Kailash Gahlot Quit AAP
In his letter of resignation, Kailash Gahlot vehemently denounced the Aam Aadmi Party’s transition from standing up for the rights of the people to advancing its own policies. The party’s capacity to provide Delhi’s citizens with basic amenities has been weakened, he claimed.
Raising worries over controversies such as the ‘Sheeshmahal’ issue, Gahlot drew attention to the Yamuna River’s continued pollution and the unfulfilled promise of cleansing it. The public, he said, is now wondering if the AAP still adheres to its core tenet of being a party of the “Aam Aadmi.”
Along with these shortcomings, Gahlot also drew attention to internal party concerns, asserting that the AAP’s emphasis on political aspirations rather than public service has impeded progress on important issues impacting Delhi’s citizens.
