Manipur: Civil Organisations Call For 24-hour Shutdown Over Rising Violence

On Wednesday morning, Manipur’s districts wore a deserted look after 13 civil organizations declared a 24-hour bandh on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in response to the state’s escalating violence.

Ten suspected armed terrorists were killed in a clash with security forces in the Jiribam area of Manipur on Tuesday. The bodies of two civilians were also discovered, and six others, including three children, were reported missing.

In protest of the government’s failure to curb the state’s rising violence since Friday (November 8), the closure was imposed. Supporters of the bandh imposed a closure on Khwairamband Market and the surrounding regions early on Wednesday morning, closing the biggest commercial center in Manipur.

Additionally, Imphal’s streets were devoid of public transportation, and schools, colleges, and other educational facilities were shuttered. However, no bandh supporters were visible on Imphal’s streets as of nine in the morning.

The 13 civil bodies’ spokesman, Shanta Nahakpam, questioned why the state administration was doing nothing about the violence in the state. He was speaking of the civilian killed on Monday in Sanasabi, Imphal East.

According to him, the government has not taken any significant action to solve the situation, even though the incidence involving many pellet wounds prompted Tangkhul civil society organizations to jam the Imphal-Jessami route.
