In Washington, Republicans have seized control of the US Senate by defeating democrats in crucial states. In addition to controlling a chamber of legislature to shape laws, this provides the Grand Old Party with significant backing for Donald Trump’s presidency in terms of validating appointments and carrying out his policies.
On Tuesday, West Virginia’s Senate seat that previously occupied by right-leaning Democratic legislator Joe Manchin, was turned over by Republicans. As a result of Manchin’s retirement, Republicans in the historical Red State were able to nominate Jim Justice, the governor of the state.
Democrat Sherrod Brown, an odd party stalwart in a Trump-leaning Red State with Vance as the second senator, lost to Republican challenger Bernie Moreno for a Senate seat in Ohio. Tim Sheehy, a Republican, defeated Jon Tester in Montana, another Red state where a Democrat held a senate seat.
As of the time of publication, Democratic incumbents were retaining their seats in Michigan and Wisconsin, while the Republican contender was leading in Pennsylvania. However, considering the extremely narrow margins, neither the AP nor the networks had called these races. Even though Republicans will benefit from those victories, Trump’s governance initiatives will benefit greatly from the majority itself.
Appointments to the main intelligence agencies, ambassadorial nominations, and cabinet positions are all contingent upon Senate approval. In this way, Trump can ensure that everyone he wants in his administration is confirmed. Although the Senate can stop impeachment, the House can also do so; this happened twice during Trump’s first term and will provide the president-elect additional options if the House shifts to the Democrats.
To guarantee that conservatives rule the court for a generation to come, Trump can also appoint new justices to the Supreme Court by controlling the Senate. This is likely to happen if he pressures some of the more senior conservative judges to step down and make room for younger justices.
