Supreme Court Upholds UP Madrasa Education Act, Emphasizes Need for Modern Standards

The backstory stems from ongoing debates over the scope of state involvement in religious education. The Allahabad High Court had initially deemed the Act unconstitutional, arguing that it infringed upon the autonomy of madrasa institutions in matters of curriculum and administration. However, proponents of the Act contended that it was designed to ensure that students in madrasas have access to a well-rounded education, including subjects that meet contemporary academic benchmarks.

By upholding the Act, the Supreme Court reaffirmed the state’s responsibility to promote quality education across all institutions, signaling that integrating modern academic standards within madrasas is a constitutional and developmental priority.
