Suspected Ex-Pakistan Army Commandos Behind Sophisticated Attacks in Jammu

Binocular-fitted M-4 US carbines and Chinese steel core bullets discovered at recent attack sites suggest that terrorists in Jammu might be retired Pakistan Army Special Service Group (SSG) personnel or highly trained guerrilla fighters, according to intelligence officials. These weapons were first seen during a deadly ambush in Poonch on April 20, 2023, where five Indian soldiers lost their lives.

While it’s not confirmed if former Pakistani army regulars are among the terrorists, the advanced guerrilla tactics observed strongly imply that the attackers are far from ordinary insurgents. They appear to be seasoned fighters using sophisticated weaponry in the dense jungles of the region. The M4 carbine, an advanced assault rifle developed in the US, and the armor-piercing Chinese steel core ammunition underline the threat’s severity.

Former Director General of Police Dr. SP Vaid expressed grave concern over the escalating situation, calling for immediate action. Reports suggest that some of these terrorists might be guided by Pakistan Army regulars, supported by local militants from Jammu who have relocated to Pakistan. Intelligence indicates that weapons abandoned by the US in Afghanistan are now making their way into Jammu and Kashmir through Pakistan.

Terror activity has surged in areas south of the Pir Panjal range, particularly in the Rajouri-Poonch sector. In response, the Indian Army has deployed more troops, reorganized its units, and strengthened intelligence networks to combat these threats. Security forces have adjusted their strategies to counter the increasing terror activities targeting Jammu, Rajouri, Poonch, Reasi, and Kathua districts.

In 2023, 71 terrorists were killed in Jammu and Kashmir, with a notable increase in the Rajouri-Poonch sector. Recent attacks include the killing of seven soldiers in counter-terror operations last year and the tragic attack on a pilgrim bus in Reasi on June 9, which resulted in nine deaths and 42 injuries. On June 26, a gunfight in Doda district saw three terrorists killed. The intensified terror activities and the sophisticated nature of these attacks highlight a critical security challenge in the region.
