Spain has introduced the “Porn Passport,” a digital initiative aimed at shielding children from easily accessible online pornography. As internet access becomes more widespread, so do its associated risks. One significant issue is the ease with which children can encounter explicit content online, often unintentionally. This new measure seeks to address this growing concern.
What is the Porn Passport?
The Porn Passport, officially known as the “Digital Wallet Beta” mobile application, is designed to prevent children from accessing pornographic content. The app not only verifies the user’s identity but also their age, ensuring that only adults can view such material.
How Does it Work?
To access adult content, users must download the Digital Wallet Beta app and obtain a monthly pass for adult websites. This process requires users to verify their age and identity using official documents such as ID cards, health or residence cards, driving licenses, or passports. Once verified, users receive 30 credits to access adult content for a month. If more content is desired, additional credits can be requested. Notably, the system does not store user data, necessitating a monthly renewal of the pass. This setup ensures that pornographic content is blocked for users under a certain age.
The Need for the Porn Passport
This initiative aims to protect children and teenagers from unwanted and potentially harmful content, safeguarding their mental health. With an estimated half of children aged 11 to 13 in Spain reportedly watching pornography, there has been a significant push for stricter regulations. Additionally, a report highlights a 116% increase in incidents of sexual exploitation by children over the past five years, underscoring the urgency of this measure.
