Canadian Prime Minister Justin Today has once again lashed out at India without naming him amid allegations of interference by other countries in Canadian elections.

Trudeau, appearing before a commission investigating alleged interference in Canadian elections, denied allegations of any foreign interference in the last two elections.

The Canadian media had earlier alleged that India was among the countries that allegedly interfered in the 2019 and 2021 elections. On the other hand, the report of Canada’s spy agency has said that there is no proof that India played any part in this election; rather, China is suspected to have interfered in the election.

However, during the hearing before the commission, Trudeau mentioned the death of Najjar terrorists from India and Khalistan. He said that the Government of Canada is committed to the security of the people of Canada, including the murder of Hardeep Singh.

Trudeau accused the Conservative Party of taking a stance favorable to the Indian government’s policy. However, the principle of my government is that anyone from the world who comes and settles in Canada has all the rights of a Canadian citizen. After that, the country they left could not coerce them. The world has seen after the killing of Nijjar how we stand with such people. We raised this issue in Parliament. It demonstrates our government’s commitment to protecting the rights and freedoms of Canadians. Our government has always stood by minorities in Canada to protect their right to speak, even if the countries they come from don’t like it.

Trudeau’s allusion was clearly to India during the hearing before the commission. Last year, Trudeau soured relations between the two countries by accusing India of involvement in the Nijjar murder case. There is still a lot of tension between India and Canada on the diplomatic front.

After the Canadian intelligence agency alleged that India had interfered in the Canadian elections, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs has hit back and termed its allegations as baseless. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs denied Canada’s allegations and accused Ottawa of conspiracy. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, ‘The main issue is the past, in which Canada has intervened on the New Delhi issue.’

Canada interferes in our internal affairs: Jaiswal
Jaiswal said, ‘The Canadian Election Commission’s investigation report has come to our attention. We strongly reject all allegations of Indian interference in Canadian elections. It is not the policy of the Government of India to interfere in the democratic process of other countries. Ulta’s Canada is interfering in our internal affairs.’

What did Canada’s intelligence agency accuse India of?
The Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) has said in a document that, ‘A federal commission of inquiry is investigating possible interference by countries such as India, Pakistan and Russia in the 2019 and 2021 elections in Canada.’ The Government of India intended to intervene in the 2021 elections in Canada by using an Indian government proxy agent and conducting covert operations.

‘India targets low-numbered districts’

The agency also alleged that the Indian government had started interfering in the 2021 elections and was focusing on low-numbered constituencies. India assumed that a section of Canadian voters of Indian origin sympathized with the Khalistan movement or pro-Pakistan political stance.

‘Financial support for pro-India candidate has run out.’

CSIS gathered intelligence and found that a proxy agent of the Indian government may have attempted to interfere in the democratic process by providing illegal financial aid to a pro-India candidate, the document said.
