Junior doctors in West Bengal signaled late Tuesday that their strike would not be called off immediately. Senior advocate Indira Jaising, representing the doctors in the Supreme Court earlier in the day, informed the bench that the doctors were prepared to resume duties once all agreed-upon confidence-building measures from their meeting with CM Mamata Banerjee were fully implemented. However, she did not specify when the doctors would return to work; the final decision rests with the doctors’ association’s general body.
After a general body meeting that concluded just before midnight, the doctors expressed the need for more visible improvements in safety and security before making a decision. They plan to seek a meeting with the state’s chief secretary to discuss additional concerns, including the holding of student union elections and the establishment of a resident doctors’ association at all medical colleges.
While some doctors at the meeting felt the strike should end as the government had met most of their demands, no consensus was reached on resuming emergency services. Bengal CM Banerjee had appealed to the doctors to return to work following her meeting with their delegation earlier.
