The Sengol controversy has reignited in Parliament, with SP supremo Akhilesh Yadav taking a jab at Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Speaking to the media on Thursday, Yadav remarked that while PM Modi bowed to Sengol during its initial installation, he seemingly forgot to do so during the recent oath-taking. Yadav suggested that an SP MP’s statement served as a reminder.
Union Ministers Anupriya Patel and Jayant Chaudhary responded to Yadav’s remarks. Anupriya questioned the whereabouts of SP MPs during the Sengol installation ceremony in Parliament.
On Wednesday, SP MP from Mohanlalganj, RK Chaudhary, called for Sengol’s removal from Parliament, arguing that it symbolizes monarchy. He wrote to the Speaker, emphasizing that Parliament is a temple of democracy, not a royal palace. Chaudhary suggested replacing Sengol with a giant replica of the Indian Constitution.
“When I took the oath, I noticed Sengol on my right. While the Constitution is the sacred book of democracy, Sengol symbolizes monarchy. Parliament is not a king’s palace,” Chaudhary stated. He formally requested the Speaker and Pro-tem Speaker to remove Sengol and install a Constitution replica instead.
Akhilesh Yadav supported RK Chaudhary’s stance, noting that the MP’s statement was a reminder to the Prime Minister. Commenting on President Draupadi Murmu’s address, Yadav critiqued the government’s economic claims, questioning why farmers and youth remain dissatisfied despite India being the world’s fifth-largest economy.
Union Minister of State Jayant Chaudhary dismissed RK Chaudhary’s comments, suggesting they were made for sensationalism. PM Modi inaugurated Sengol in the new Parliament building on May 28, 2023, asserting that the scepter symbolizes justice and devotion to the people, not just power.
Adhinam Mahants from Tamil Nadu’s ancient Matha attended the installation of ‘Sengol’ in the Lok Sabha, underscoring its cultural and historical significance.
