Sanjay Raut, a leader of the Shiv Sena (UBT), asserted on Sunday that DY Chandrachud, the former Chief Justice of India, encouraged defectors by delaying a decision on their petitions for disqualification. He attacked the CJI the day after the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance suffered a humiliating defeat in the Maharashtra assembly election.
Sanjay Raut further said that Justice Chandrachud’s name will be written in black letters in history. “He (Chandrachud) has removed the fear of the law from defectors. His name will be written in black letters in history,” he was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.
Sanjay Raut said Chandrachud left defections open by not making a decision on the disqualification petitions.
Only 20 of the 95 seats Sanjay Raut’s party ran for in the Maharashtra election were won. Of the 101 seats it ran for, the Congress only won 16. Only ten seats were won by Sharad Pawar’s NCP (SP).
Former confidante Eknath Shinde overthrew Uddhav Thackeray in 2022 and took the majority of the party’s MPs and MLAs with him. Later, Shinde became the chief minister of Maharashtra after joining the BJP.
The supreme court left the disqualification petitions up to the assembly speaker when Thackeray knocked on the court’s door. Later, Speaker Rahul Narwekar proclaimed the group led by Shinde to be the true Shiv Sena.
“We are sad but not disappointed. We will not leave the fight incomplete. Division of votes was also a factor, and the RSS played an important role in the election. The poisonous campaign impacted us negatively,” Raut said on the election result. He added that the swearing-in event for the new administration ought to take place in neighboring Gujarat, a direct jab at the BJP.
Over 230 of the 288 seats in the state were won by the Mahayuti alliance, which is led by the BJP. The single-largest party was the BJP.
On November 10, Justice DY Chandrachud retired.
