Deaths And Severe Injuries Mark Gujarat’s Uttarayan Festival

The Uttarayan celebration has been marked by tragedy, with over 100 people injured and multiple fatalities caused by kite-related incidents throughout Gujarat. There have been deadly instances involving kite strings and falls in Saurashtra and Vadodara, the areas most affected.

In Ahmedabad, a young man died after falling from a roof. Kite strings injured more than 100 people, several of whom were critically injured. A portion of the media was informed by Deputy Commissioner B.C. Parmar that several people were treated at nearby hospitals, such as LG Hospital, Shardaben Hospital, SVP Hospital, and V.S. Hospital. Of the 34 patients treated at LG Hospital, eight needed additional care. One patient passed away, while another is still in critical condition. One patient who lost a finger as a result of a kite string was among the 33 patients treated at Shardaben Hospital. Cuts to the hands, feet, neck, and head were among the reported injuries.

During the two-day celebration, Vadodara recorded six deaths, including Madhuri Patel, 35, of Chani Jakat Naka, who passed away after being stabbed in the throat by a kite string. About 70 injured people were treated at hospitals in Sayaji and Gotri, many of them had been involved in falls or accidents involving trains. A five-year-old boy was killed in a terrible incident in Halol as he was riding a bike with his father and was struck by a rope.

In Mehsana, the use of glass-coated and prohibited Chinese kite strings resulted in multiple serious injuries and two fatalities. Four fatalities were reported in Rajkot alone, making Saurashtra the worst affected region. The victims included Ayankhan Pathan (18), Kashyap Vivekbhai Chandra (10), and Prakash Jaysukhbhai Serasia (28). With 296 patients treated in Rajkot, 188 in Bhavnagar, and 130 in Kutch, the area suffered a large number of injuries. Surendranagar, Gandhidham, Palitana, Jamjodhpur, and Mahuva all reported more deaths.

In Surat, South Gujarat, two people died as a result of bike falls rather than injuries sustained while kite flying. There are now four fatalities in the region as Navsari and Valsad each reported one death. In Navsari, hospitals treated 68 injury cases, most of which were from slashes or falls brought on by the hazardous kite lines.

Hospitals throughout Gujarat are overflowing with cases of serious injuries from this year’s Uttarayan celebrations, underscoring the perils of using illicit kite strings once more. The festival, which has a lively kite-flying tradition, has grown more dangerous because of the extensive usage of prohibited materials.
