CM Bhupendra Patel Pays Tributes To Ex-PM Manmohan Singh, Lauds His Contribution In Economic Reforms

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel commended the late Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for his excellent leadership of the nation from 2004 to 2014 and highlighted his role in boosting the economy on Wednesday.

PTI reported, Patel paid respects to Singh, who died last December at the age of 92, on the first day of the state legislative assembly’s budget session.

As per the convention, on the opening day of the session, respects were given to leaders who had passed away.

Patel stated, “Manmohan Singh, who studied economics in top educational institutions like Cambridge and Oxford, held key positions in past governments, such as finance secretary, Reserve Bank’s governor and as the chairman of University Grants Commission”.

Additionally, from 1991 until 2024, Singh was a member of the Rajya Sabha for six terms. According to the CM, he led the opposition in the upper house of Parliament from 1998 to 2004.

Patel stated, “Economic reforms brought by Singh in 1991 as finance minister played an important role in giving pace to the Indian economy. As the 14th prime minister of India, Dr Singh successfully led the country from 2004 to 2014”.

He added that Singh’s work in advancing the policy of comprehensive economic reforms in India earned him the title of “father of economic reforms” throughout the world.

He noted that Singh received numerous honors, including the Padma Vibhushan for his national service.

According to Patel, Singh was a distinguished economist and a gallant leader who guided India toward economic success.

Amit Chavda, the leader of the Congress Legislative Party, told the House that Singh was the target of multiple accusations of corruption, but that none of them had been proven.

He continued, “However, without harbouring any grudge, Singh never responded to such allegations. He replied through his remarkable work”.

According to Chavda, “People in India and around the world remember Singh more as a capable administrator than as a politician”.

He stated, “Singh created a foundation for economic reforms through liberalisation and globalization”.

Chavda gave Singh credit for guiding India out of the challenging circumstances during the 1990 global slump.

Chavda stated, “India was also struggling because of dwindling foreign reserves and was on the brink of economic collapse. At that time, the only solution was to mortgage our gold reserve to avoid default. hanks to the decisions taken by Dr Singh as finance minister, India not only came out of that difficult situation, our economy also found a new direction due to reforms brought by Dr Singh”.

He added Singh left behind a legacy of welfare legislation and programs including the MNREGA, Food Security Act, Right to Information Act, and Right to Education Act.
