Delhi-NCR Earthquake: Strong Tremors Felt In National Capital & Surrounding Areas

Early on Monday morning, a 4.0-magnitude earthquake rocked Delhi-NCR, sending powerful tremors through the area. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake struck at 5:36 am at a depth of five kilometers, with New Delhi serving as its epicenter.

The earthquake was detected at a latitude of 28.59° North and a longitude of 77.16° East, per NCS data. According to an official quoted by PTI, the epicenter occurred close to Durgabai Deshmukh College of Special Education in Dhaula Kuan.

In a post on X, the agency stated that the earthquake was detected five kilometers below the surface of New Delhi.

The official added that low-magnitude earthquakes occur in the area, which includes a lake close by, every two to three years; the most recent recorded 3.3-mag earthquake was in 2015. The earthquake was said to have made a loud noise.

Several areas of the National Capital Region (NCR), including Delhi, Noida, Greater Noida, and Ghaziabad, experienced the earthquakes. Residents of high-rise buildings in several locations fled outside in terror as a result of the impact.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged individuals to maintain their composure and take safety precautions on the microblogging platform X. “Tremors were felt in Delhi and nearby areas. Urging everyone to stay calm and follow safety precautions, staying alert for possible aftershocks. Authorities are keeping a close watch on the situation,” he said on X.

The shocks were more severe because the earthquake was only five kilometers deep. According to experts, small earthquakes typically have a greater impact than deeper ones. Low-magnitude earthquakes have been occurring in the Jheel Park area every two to three years, according to an official, with the most recent recorded 3.3-mag earthquake taking place in 2015. Additionally, some locals claimed to have heard a tremendous noise when the ground trembled.
Numerous people in high-rise buildings hurried out of their homes as a result of the tremors that were felt throughout Delhi, Noida, Greater Noida, and Ghaziabad.

In an X post, the Delhi Police reassured locals, saying, “We hope you all are safe, Delhi!” and asked them to contact the emergency helpline 112 if they needed to.

AAP leader Atishi wrote on X, “A strong earthquake just hit Delhi. I pray to God that everyone is safe.” AAP’s national convenor Arvind Kejriwal reshared the post, adding, “I pray for the safety of everyone.”
