Pune Records 22 Suspected Cases Of Guillian-Barré syndrome. What Is It?

As many as 22 suspected cases of Guillian-Barré syndrome (GBS), an immunological nerve disorder, have been reported in Pune, PTI reported, citing civic officials.

Guillian-Barré syndrome is a rare disorder that manifests as severe limb paralysis and abrupt numbness and muscular weakness.

Civic officials have been compelled by the development to carry out a thorough patient survey.

The health department of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has sent the samples of individuals impacted to ICMR-NIV for analysis. The majority of these cases were found in the city’s Sinhgad Road area, according to officials.

Only one incidence included a 59-year-old patient who is now receiving treatment; the majority of suspected patients are between the age group of 12 to 30 years.

‘No need for panic’: Says Doctor

According to Dr. Nina Borade, Chief of the civic health department, three or four hospitals in the city have reported probable GBS cases, as reported by PTI.

She stated, “Reports of suspected Guillain-Barré syndrome cases have surfaced in the last two days. We have initiated a detailed probe and constituted an expert panel. We have also sent samples of these suspected cases to ICMR-NIV for further investigation”.

The doctor went on to say that since bacterial and viral illness impair immunity, they typically result in GBS.

She stated, adding that with treatment, most people recover fully from the condition, “It is prevalent in both pediatric and young age groups. However, GBS will not lead to an epidemic or pandemic”, reported PTI.

She continued, “We have constituted a committee of experts, including scientists from NIV and epidemiologists. A detailed surveillance of the patients will be conducted. There is no need for panic as of now”.
