Home Minister Amit Shah Celebrates Uttarayan In Gujarat, Flies Kite

On Tuesday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, along with Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, celebrated the festival of Makar Sankranti, also known as Uttarayan, by taking to kite-flying.

Amit Shah, who also holds the Cooperation Ministry portfolio, visited the Shantiniketan Society in Ahmedabad’s Memnagar and participated in the festivities and extended his good wishes to the residents of the society.

Earlier, the residents of the Shantiniketan Society, including women and children, decorated the area with beautiful and colourful kites and rangoli and gave a warm welcome to the Home Minister.

Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel extended his wishes to everyone on this special by sharing the photos of kite-flying festivities on his ‘X’ handle.

Earlier, the Home Minister Amit Shah also greeted the countrymen on the occasion of Makar Sankranti on his ‘X’ handle.

He posted on X, “Makar Sankranti is a festival of unwavering faith in Indian culture and tradition. Heartiest greetings to the countrymen on this holy festival of energy, enthusiasm and progress”.

About Makar Sankranti festival

Makar Sankranti is celebrated on January 14 of every year that marks the first day of Sun’s transit into the Makara (Capricorn zodiac sign), marking the end of the Winter solstice and the beginning of longer days.

The festival is known by different names in different regions of India like Pongal in Tamil Nadu, Bihu in Assam, Sakraat in Rajasthan and Maghi in Punjab.

In Gujarat, this festival is celebrated as ‘Uttarayan’ where Kite-flying is most popular custom with people gathering on their rooftops to immerse themselves in kite flying festivities and also engaging in friendly kite-fights in the clear skies.
