December 20, 2024: As many as 1,70,963 cases are currently pending in the Gujarat High Court, while the District and Subordinate Courts of Gujarat have 16,90,643 ongoing cases. In response to the inquiry raised by Rajya Sabha member Shri Parimal Nathwani, Union Minister of State for Law and Justice (Independent Charge) and Parliamentary Affairs Shri Arjun Ram Meghwal provided the information to the Rajya Sabha on December 19, 2024.
According to Minister’s statement, which was delivered to the House, there are presently 82,640 cases pending in the Supreme Court of India, 61,80,878 cases pending in the nation’s High Courts, and 4,62,34,646 cases pending in the country’s District and Subordinate courts.
The Minister’s statement states that there are 20 vacancies in the Gujarat High Court out of a sanctioned total of 52 judges, and there are 535 open positions in the Gujarat’s District and Subordinate Courts out of a sanctioned total of 1720 judges. According to the minister, there are 368 vacant positions in the nation’s High Courts out of the total sanctioned strength of 1122 judges, and 5262 vacant positions out of the nation’s District and Subordinate Courts, which includes 25741 judges. The statement affirms that out of the 34 judges sanctioned by the Supreme Court of India, only one judge position remains vacant.
In addition to inquiring about the number of pending cases in the nation’s subordinate courts, Mr. Nathwani was also interested in the number of vacancies in the Supreme Court, High Courts, and Lower courts.
