Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s maiden speech in the Lok Sabha on Friday received a strong show of support from Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the House, along with other party leaders.
Rahul Gandhi, when questioned about Priyanka’s speech, claimed that his sister’s first speech in the Lok Sabha was superior to his first speech as a new Member of Parliament. In 2004, Rahul Gandhi was elected as a Member of Parliament for the first time.
Gandhi told media persons outside Lok Sabha, “Wonderful speech. Better than my maiden speech, let’s put it like that”.
Priyanka, the recently elected Wayanad MP, spoke to the House for the first time today, emphasizing the need of preserving India’s constitution, women’s empowerment, and national unity.
‘Surakshakavach’: Priyanka Gandhi on the constitution
In her first speech in the Lok Sabha, Congresswoman and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi criticized the ruling government on Friday, calling the Constitution a “Suraksha kavach” (protective shield). She claimed that the Union government has tried everything in the past ten years to undermine the “kavach” (shield).
Speaking at a ceremony marking the 75th anniversary of the Indian Constitution’s promulgation, Priyanka Gandhi honored the 2001 warriors who died defending Parliament.
Priyanka Gandhi also criticised the government’s stance on the caste census in Lok Sabha and said that, “They win elections by narrowly escaping defeat… a caste census is the need of the hour, yet they trivialise it by discussing things like mangalsutras. Today, people of the country are demanding that there be a Caste Census.”
In order to settle continuing political disputes, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra proposed holding a ballot, saying, “Conduct elections through a ballot, and the truth will be revealed.”
In addition, she criticized the policies of the BJP-led NDA government, claiming that “government is trying to weaken reservation through lateral entry, privatization”.
She further mentioned the meeting of Sambhal violence victims and said that they had a dream to get their children educated.
