In a lavish ceremony held in Ranchi on Thursday, Hemant Soren was sworn in as Jharkhand’s 14th chief minister. Many well-known political figures attended the swearing-in ceremony, including West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi. Soren was given the oath of office and secrecy by Jharkhand Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar.
The 49-year-old head of the JMM is serving his fourth term as chief minister. In the most recent assembly elections, Soren defeated Gamliyel Hembrom of the BJP by a margin of 39,791 votes, retaining his seat in Barhait. The BJP-led NDA earned 24 seats in the 81-member Jharkhand Assembly, while the JMM-led alliance achieved a landslide victory with 56 seats.
In anticipation of the swearing-in of the Hemant Soren administration, Ranchi city’s schools were closed on Thursday.
A lavish ceremony
AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, NCP Chief Sharad Pawar, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, and other important opposition figures like Arvind Kejriwal, Uddhav Thackeray, Akhilesh Yadav, Mehbooba Mufti, and Tejashwi Yadav attended the ceremony.
To accommodate the event, Ranchi schools were closed and traffic restrictions were implemented around the city. Hemant Soren and senior officials visited the Morabadi ground the night before to inspect the plans, and posters commemorating the event were displayed throughout the city.
As confirmed by Jharkhand Congress in-charge Ghulam Ahmad Mir, Soren took the oath alone for the time being, but the extension of his cabinet will occur following a vote of confidence in the assembly.
Considering the importance of the occasion, Soren remarked, “It’s heartening to have such esteemed leaders join us for this important occasion.”
