On Monday, November 11, senior Supreme Court judge Justice Sanjiv Khanna was sworn in as India’s 51st Chief Justice at Rashtrapati Bhavan. At ten in the morning, President Droupadi Murmu gave him the oath of office. He will hold the position of Chief Justice of India for a period of six months.
The outgoing Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, who retired on November 10 after serving since November 9, 2022, nominated Justice Sanjiv Khanna, the Supreme Court’s second-most senior judge, to be Chief Justice.
Who Is Justice Sanjiv Khanna?
Sanjiv Khanna was born on May 14, 1960, and joined the Delhi Bar Council as an advocate in 1983, starting his legal career. He is well-versed in business law, taxation, arbitration, environmental law, and constitutional law.
Justice Khanna also served as the Senior Standing Counsel for the Income Tax Department. He was named Standing Counsel (Civil) for the Delhi National Capital Territory in 2004.
Beginning his noteworthy judicial career, Justice Khanna was appointed as an additional judge of the Delhi High Court in 2005 and was made a permanent judge in 2006.
A major influence on the development of the legal system, Justice Khanna also made important contributions to the Delhi Judicial Academy, Delhi International Arbitration Center, and District Court Mediation Centers during his time there.
Without having held the position of Chief Justice of a High Court before, Justice Khanna was appointed as a Supreme Court judge on January 18, 2019.
Among her numerous historic rulings, Justice Khanna granted former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal temporary bail. Kejriwal’s campaign for the Lok Sabha elections was made possible by this move.
In a significant decision, Justice Khanna emphasized that the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) may allow for the granting of bail in cases where procedures have been delayed. This ruling was made in the instance of Manish Sisodia, the former deputy chief minister of Delhi.
