According to the Washington Post, Russian President Vladimir Putin has received a warning from US President-elect Donald Trump not to intensify the conflict in Ukraine. Just days after defeating Democratic challenger Kamala Harris in a landslide election, he made the comments on Thursday while speaking over the phone from his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.
Trump allegedly reminded Putin during the phone of the significant US military posture in Europe and indicated desire in more talks to end the conflict in Ukraine. Trump underlined the need for the dispute to end and indicated a readiness to hold further discussions with Moscow on the matter, according to multiple anonymous individuals that the Post reported.
Trump’s Wednesday chat with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, which also included tech tycoon Elon Musk, preceded the discussion. “Excellent,” Zelensky said of the call, he expressed hope for further communication and collaboration with the incoming administration.
Russia-Ukraine war
After more than two and a half years, the Russia-Ukraine conflict continues to be a crucial topic in world geopolitics. Both parties to the conflict have taken actions in recent months that are perceived as potential attempts to obtain leverage before future talks, with Moscow’s soldiers advancing in Ukraine and Ukraine capturing a portion of Russian territory.
Both sides launched the largest drone attacks to date this past weekend. Zelensky claimed Russia sent 145 drones at Ukraine overnight, while Russia claimed to have shot down 34 Ukrainian drones that were aimed at Moscow on Sunday.
A Changing Landscape
Trump’s election is thought to have the power to halt the nearly three-year-old conflict in Ukraine because he demands an immediate end to the bloodshed and raises questions about Washington’s multibillion-dollar backing for Kyiv.
President Joe Biden’s departing Democratic administration has affirmed that it will provide Ukraine with as much aid as feasible prior to Trump’s January 20 inauguration.
Jake Sullivan, the White House’s national security advisor, reiterated President Joe Biden’s commitment to Ukraine on Sunday, emphasizing the necessity of sustained US assistance until Biden’s last day in office. In an interview with “Face the Nation,” Sullivan stated, “Our goal is to place Ukraine in the best possible position on the battlefield.”
