On Sunday night, Priyanshu Jain, a 23-year-old MICA student from Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, was tragically stabbed after a confrontation with a cab driver in the Bopal area of Ahmedabad.
After a furious disagreement about irresponsible driving, the driver allegedly struck Priyanshu and ran away from the scene.
At approximately 10.30 p.m. on Sunday, the incident took place close to the Bopal fire station. Reports state that before an interview, MICA students Priyanshu and his friend Prithviraj Mohapatra had gone to have their outfits altered. After that, the two had made a quick stop at a bakery for some sweets while riding a friend’s Bullet motorcycle. A fast-moving vehicle passed them closely as they were leaving, so Priyanshu yelled at the driver to slow down.
In retaliation, the driver confronted the students after pursuing their motorcycle. The driver yelled at Priyanshu, allegedly taunting him, and then took two knives out of his car, according to witnesses. The resulting conflict resulted in Priyanshu being stabbed several times. A passerby immediately rushed him to a nearby hospital, but his injuries were too severe, and he was declared dead shortly after being transferred to Zydus Hospital.
According to senior police officer, as the altercation progressed, a woman in the street halted to assist Prithviraj and swiftly carried the hurt Priyanshu into her vehicle. She hurried them to the hospital without waiting for emergency personnel to reach the scene, with her 13-year-old son also in the car.
Prithviraj, who witnessed the incident, has filed a formal complaint at the Bopal police station. To identify the attacker, the police and forensic specialists have launched an inquiry and are gathering CCTV footage from surrounding places. Police have opened a murder investigation and are diligently following up on leads to find the culprit.
MICA released statement saying, “The tragic incident that occurred off campus and resulted in the death of one of our second-year students saddens us greatly. The MICA community has suffered a great loss. We are doing everything we can to support the student community, the bereaved family, and the police investigation. This is an incredibly difficult time for everyone in our community and we would request you to respect the family’s privacy at this time”.
