Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg has opted not to endorse Donald Trump or Joe Biden in the upcoming U.S. presidential election, as reported by Bloomberg News on Friday. Zuckerberg made it clear he does not intend to be involved in the election in any capacity. This stance contrasts with other influential Silicon Valley figures, including Tesla’s Elon Musk and venture capitalists Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz, who have thrown their support behind Trump.
In a recent interview, Zuckerberg described former President Trump’s immediate reaction after being shot at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, as “badass” and inspiring, which he believes explains Trump’s appeal to many voters. During the assassination attempt, one of the bullets grazed Trump’s right ear. The incident has incited anger among Trump’s supporters and caused a pause in the Democratic campaign, heightening fears of further political violence.
Meta has previously flagged Trump’s posts for misinformation and suspended his Facebook and Instagram accounts for nearly two years following the January 2021 Capitol riots. Zuckerberg stated that Meta is implementing changes to reduce its platforms’ impact on elections. “I think you’re going to see our services play less of a role in this election than they have in the past,” he told Bloomberg.
