As of July 14, it will be a month since the official arrival of the southwest monsoon in Gujarat, yet the state continues to experience insufficient rainfall. So far, Gujarat has received only 9.15 inches of rain, accounting for 26.32% of the seasonal average. In stark contrast, by July 12 last year, the state had already received 21.34 inches, 48% of the seasonal average.
Currently, 18 districts in Gujarat are experiencing a rainfall deficit of over 20%. Data indicates that the state received 4.52 inches of rain in June and only 4.62 inches up to July 12. Additionally, 166 talukas have recorded less than 10 inches of rainfall. By comparison, in 2023, only 57 talukas had received less than 10 inches of rain by July 12. Last year, 25 out of 63 talukas had reported over 20 inches of rain.
Looking at the past few years, rainfall by July 12 stood at 10 inches in 2020, 5.85 inches in 2021, and 14.23 inches in 2022. This year marks the second lowest rainfall in the last five years by this date.
