Breakthrough Discovery: Chandrayaan-3 Rover Confirms Presence of Key Elements on Lunar Surface

In a series of remarkable breakthroughs, the Chandrayaan-3 rover Pragyan has not only confirmed the presence of several crucial elements but has also identified the existence of Sulphur at the Moon’s south pole. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) shared these extraordinary findings, marking another significant achievement in India’s space exploration efforts.

The solar-powered Pragyan rover, accompanied by the Vikram lander, is making remarkable strides in its mission. Among the elements detected by the rover are aluminium, calcium, iron, chromium, titanium, manganese, silicon, and oxygen, all of which were anticipated prior to the mission.

The most recent revelation comes from the Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscope (LIBS) instrument, an advanced analytical tool onboard the rover. Through this technology, the presence of Sulphur (S) on the lunar surface near the south pole was confirmed through groundbreaking in-situ measurements. ISRO proudly announced this feat on social media, underlining the significance of this achievement.

“In-situ scientific experiments continue… Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscope (LIBS) instrument onboard the Rover unambiguously confirms the presence of Sulphur (S) in the lunar surface near the south pole, through first-ever in-situ measurements,” the official ISRO statement read.

Furthermore, the rover’s observations align with expectations as it successfully identified elements such as aluminium, calcium, iron, chromium, titanium, manganese, silicon, and oxygen. The exploration for the presence of Hydrogen (H) is currently underway, further adding to the rover’s mission objectives.

The Pragyan rover and Vikram lander, both powered by solar energy, are projected to continue their groundbreaking research endeavors for an additional seven days. In a related development, the Indian space agency disclosed that the Pragyan rover encountered an intriguing feature on the Moon’s surface. Specifically, the rover came upon a crater with a diameter of four meters, situated just three meters ahead of its current location. Following the discovery, ISRO commanded the rover to retrace its path, ensuring its safety as it embarks on a new trajectory.

This series of achievements culminated on August 23, when India achieved a historic milestone by successfully landing Chandrayaan-3 near the Moon’s south pole. With this triumph, India emerged as the first nation to achieve a successful landing in this challenging region.
