Zomato To Change Its Name ‘Eternal’; Shocks Social Media

The online meal delivery service Zomato has made the unexpected decision to rename its parent business from “Zomato Limited” to “Eternal Limited.”

Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal informed shareholders in a letter that the name change has been authorized by the board. He said in the letter, “Our corporate website will transition from zomato.com to eternal.com. We will also change our stock ticker from ZOMATO to ETERNAL. Eternal will comprise four major businesses (as of now) – Zomato, Blinkit, District, and Hyperpure”.

The company’s four main operations—Zomato, Blinkit, District, and Hyperpure—will now be included in the new name and logo.

Many people were perplexed by the rebrand’s implications for their preferred food delivery app as the news circulated on social media.

Social media shocked by name change

“Kyu naam badal rhe ho, kya bhai. Zomato appeals to my mother. One user complained that saying “Eternal” was a little challenging.

“Zomato aacha naam tha yaaaarr! Eternal Mai vo baat nahi hai. Aaj se Swiggy use karuga,” joked another user.

However, Goyal has stated that the name of the meal delivery business will not change. Others noted that the rebranding sounded similar to Google’s (Alphabet) and Facebook’s (Meta) efforts.

“Facebook > Meta, Zomato > Eternal, Twitter > X.” It just makes things more difficult for us to communicate. No one really cares about the name, founders. One of them remarked, “Unless you have been found guilty of fraud and wish to start over, let it be what it was.”

“I suppose the argument about whether it is Zo-maa-to or Zo-ma-to is over! It’s neither. Now it’s “Eternal.” In all seriousness, the corporate entity’s name simply changes to “Eternal.” Another person remarked, “Sorry, Zo-maa-to, the platform is still Zomato.”

“Zomato has chosen to change their name to Eternal, which is now ingrained in our memories. They would undoubtedly expand their offerings beyond food delivery, maybe branching out into grocery delivery and subscription-based services. I don’t know what DG is thinking, but this is a brave move,” a third person commented.

“The company’s name change to Eternal is refreshing,” remarked a fourth. However, let Zomato (the app) be Zomato.
