The Ahmedabad City Police have equipped their traffic enforcement vans with AI-powered dashcams in an effort to improve traffic regulation and road safety.
This program was started in partnership with SmartCity with the goal of reducing traffic infractions and facilitating real-time tracking of the city’s growing automobile population.
The Ahmedabad Traffic Police have received more than 60 devices as part of the scheme. Of these, 31 portable devices will be provided to traffic officers for use at key areas as needed, and 29 dashcams, including interceptors, will be mounted on traffic vehicles.
With the help of this technology, infractions including riding without a helmet, triple riding, wrong-side driving, and unsafe driving would be automatically detected and recorded, giving authorities hard proof to use in court.
Automated enforcement and monitoring
Safin Hasan, the Traffic DCP, said, “The traffic personnel only need to activate the mobile devices, which will begin recording videos. Within 30 to 40 seconds, the software will automatically recognize traffic offenders and capture photos and videos. These are then sent to the control room server, where a team verifies the evidence. Challans are subsequently generated and violators are notified via SMS”.
Resolving an expanding issue
Road accidents have increased as a result of the dramatic growth in vehicle traffic in Ahmedabad. Motorcycle accidents involving riders without helmets continue to be especially common. There are still infractions despite continuous awareness initiatives, hence stronger enforcement actions are necessary.
One senior traffic official emphasized the advantages of the new system, saying, “The dashcams ensure accurate documentation of violations, protect officers from false accusations, and provide an unbiased account of on-ground situations.”
Successful pilot project
Five devices were implanted in vehicles during a test phase that was carried out at the SG-1 and SG-2 traffic police stations two months ago. There were 14 seatbelt-related infractions, 21 cases of hazardous driving, and 794 helmet-related infractions, which was encouraging. As soon as possible, legal action was taken against the violators.
The AI technology employed by the dashcams effortlessly combines with the current traffic systems. The National Informatics Centre (NIC) server receives the automatically recorded and uploaded violations on Nayan’s cloud server, which are then confirmed at the control room. One Nation, One Challan is the technique used to notify offenders.
Expansion plans
The Ahmedabad Traffic Police plan to add transgressions like unlawful parking and other infractions to the list of monitored violations. The government wants to use state-of-the-art technology to streamline traffic, lower the number of traffic accidents, and enforce more stringent restrictions. In order to further improve traffic control, plans are now in motion to incorporate additional devices.
