Another Hindu priest, Sri Shyam Das Prabhu, was detained in Bangladesh on Friday amid the ongoing tension over the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das, according to ISKOON Kolkata spokesperson Radharamn Das.
On the microblogging platform X, Radharamn, who is also the vice president of ISKCON Kolkata, posted, “Another Brahmachari Sri Shyam Das Prabhu was arrested by Chattogram Police today.”
In Bangladesh and India, there have been widespread demonstrations demanding the release of Chinmoy Krishna Das, a former member of ISCKON.
In another post, sharing Shyam Das Prabhu’s picture, he wrote, “Does he look like a terrorist #FreeISKCONMonks Bangladesh. The arrest of innocent #ISKCON brahmacharis are deeply shocking & disturbing.”
Notably, a Chattogram court on Tuesday denied bail to Chinmoy Krishna Das, who had been jailed on sedition allegations.
Following the arrest of the former ISKCON head, India voiced “deep concern” and urged the Bangladeshi authorities to protect Hindus.
Since Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League administration fell on August 5, more than 200 attacks have been carried out in 50 different districts against Bangladesh’s minority Hindu population, which makes up only 8% of the country’s 170 million inhabitants.
Earlier in the day, the right-wing Hindu organization Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh in India denounced the “alarming” crimes committed against Hindus and other religious minorities in Dhaka.
The Muhammad Yunus-led interim government came under fire from the Sangh for being a “mute spectator.”
Chinmoy Das’ arrest was also deemed “unfair” by the RSS, which called for his immediate release. In order to stop the ongoing atrocities against Hindus and other religious minorities, it further urged the Indian government to keep up every effort.
At the same time, Bangladesh claimed that there was no threat to the country’s minorities and that Hindus were “safe” there.
Shafikul Islam, the press secretary for Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus, had also confirmed that the government is dedicated to making sure Chinmoy Das is given a fair trial.
