On Sunday, at an interaction with the Indian community in Brisbane, Australia, India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar said, India is working to find a peaceful solution to the Israel-Hamus and Russia-Ukraine conflicts through diplomacy because it is one of the few nations that can speak to the warning sides in both situations and also both battles have raised concerns due to their extensive aftermath making 125 countries of Global South suffering.
Jaishankar, while pointing out Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Russia in July and Ukraine in August, cited Modi’s participation in attempts to find a peaceful solution. Jaishankar stated, “Modi had meetings with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in June and September, and he met with Russian President Vladimir Putin once more in Kazan, Russia, in October. There is a circumstance that does require some proactive diplomacy. That is our goal”.
In his words, “We believe that the rest of the world shouldn’t give up and say, ‘All right, let’s wait for them to slug it out and one day they’ll get tired and something will happen.'” Because aside from the costs incurred by these nations and the region, the world incurs costs every day.
While there was “some skepticism” when India first started its efforts, Jaishankar recognized that there is now “much greater understanding, especially among Western countries.” It has the backing of Global South as well. “We are hoping that by having several conversations, we can find some common ground so that some diplomatic beginnings can resume,” he stated.
He noted that both wars are concerning because instability in a globalized world affects everyone in terms of inflation, food and energy security, and supply chain disruptions.
