From Lens to Canvas: Exploring Ahmedabad’s Artistic Treasures

Have you ever stopped to appreciate the details surrounding you truly? Imagine these details captured on canvas—through abstract splashes of color or intricately composed photographs. Art is deeply intertwined with our lives, culture, and surroundings. That wall hanging in your living room, the dream catcher above your bed, even the crochet top in your wardrobe—all art forms. While we often pay a hefty price for these tangible forms, why, as a society, do we overlook the beauty of the art we experience for free? This weekend, Team Maadhyam embarked on a quest to discover talented local artists in Ahmedabad, stumbling upon two exhibitions that filled our hearts with joy and wonder.

The first, Wildlife Wonders, was a wildlife photography exhibition held at ICAC Gallery by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, celebrating the 70th National Wildlife Week. This exhibition showcased the stunning work of 10 passionate photographers. We spoke with Marvel Andrews and Jaitra Khambhati, whose love for wildlife and photography has resulted in breathtaking images. Marvel Andrews, known for his expertise in black-and-white photography, excels in multiple exposure techniques and plays with shutter speed to capture the quick, elusive movements of animals like leopards and flamingos. Meanwhile, Jaitra Khambhati unveils the hidden beauty of wildlife through his lens, leaving viewers spellbound with his visionary approach.

But our artistic journey didn’t stop there. Another awe-inspiring exhibition, Chintan, held at Ahmedabad Ni Gufa, featured the works of Ravindra Laxman and Gyanba Kachgunde. This exhibition blended abstract emotions and mythological themes. Ravindra’s expertise lies in capturing human emotions in abstract form, while Gyanba’s art revisits his childhood and the mythological tales of the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Lord Shiva. Both artists, Marathis at heart, left Amdavadis in awe with their minute, intricate works.

These exhibitions reminded us of the importance of connecting with our city through its art while also recognizing the artists who generously share their souls with us. When will you take a moment to do the same?
